You can wear running shoes for the gym, but you shouldn’t. This is because running shoes are not made to stand against weight lifting, standing presses, squats, or deadlifts. You can not perform exercises requiring ground stability while wearing running shoes. 

But the good news is that there are still plenty of exercises for which you can use running shoes. That means running shoes are not always bad when hitting the gym.

Most standard running shoes have a maximum durability of 300 to 500 miles before they need replacement. So use them wisely to avoid replacing them prematurely. 

Running shoes are built with softer cushioning. Hence, these shoes have a higher stack height. However, high-sole shoes are not the best for training as they are less stable and possess marginal ground stability. 

They are made to absorb the high impact of running, jumping, and repetitive pounding. But running shoes are a big no-no when it comes to technical exercises that require a higher degree of stability, firmness, and functionality. 

Moreover, running shoes are equipped with advanced midsole technology. And you don’t accidentally want to damage the shoe’s midsole while trying to lift heavy weights. 

The high sole and soft cushion in running shoes can compromise your safety and may even cause injuries. You can, however, use running shoes in the gym for running on a treadmill and for exercises like biceps curls, lateral raises, bench presses, or open-chain exercises. 

What’s the Difference Between Running Shoes and Training Shoes?

Running shoes are lightweight and built for linear, consistent forward movement on a flat surface. These shoes have increased running efficiency, a high stack height, and heel drop.

Most running shoes have a curvy tip and soft midsole for forward and rolling movement. They are designed for a smooth transition from heel strike to toe-off.

Training shoes, on the other hand, have firmer cushioning. They are manufactured for aggressive multidirectional movement. 

These shoes allow ground contact and stability that you require during training. They’re flatter and have wider toe boxes which means that they allow for a wider range of motion during exercises such as deadlifts or squats.

None is superior to the other. However, for gymming and exercise, training shoes are your best option. 

Why Can You Not Use Running Shoes for Gym?

When running, the pressure from your body weight is mostly transferred to the heel and toe. This is why most running shoes have a high heel-to-toe drop. 

Similarly, running shoes have the softest cushioning material in the midsole resulting in a higher stack height. These technical details in running shoes work perfectly well for running.

In contrast, when it comes to lifting, your body needs a more sturdy and firm surface to carry the additional weight. This is why the cross-training shoes have flat soles and a low cushioning effect with a lower stack height. 

Using running shoes for the gym will decrease the durability of your shoes, making you buy another in a short span of time. Moreover, the high soles of running shoes are unstable and can even result in ankle joint injuries and sore feet.

When Can You Use Running Shoes for Gym?

Don’t get disheartened! Even though you can’t do exercises requiring sturdiness and stability from the shoes, running shoes can still do well with less aggressive exercises.

For instance, core exercises, Zumba, jumping ropes, bench press, seated press, Machine-based bodybuilding, and bodyweight exercises allow you to confidently wear your running shoes to the gym.

You can even use weights while wearing running shoes as long as the lift doesn’t require you to be on your feet. Similarly, you can use running shoes for exercises that do not require aggressive lateral movements.

Overall, running shoes might not be your best choice for the gym, but they’re not the worst either. Training shoes are firmer, more stable, sturdier, and more comfortable for exercises requiring greater mobility and ground stability. 

If you’re a beginner and want to invest in shoes that are stable enough to lift lightweight, flexible enough for running on a treadmill, cushioned enough for low-pressure exercises, and light enough for gymnastics, running shoes are not bad!

For instance, treadmill athletes prefer shoes that offer better cushioning and flexibility. In contrast, if you do heavy lifting, you should invest in more stable and flatter shoes. But always choose lightweight, stable, and comfortable training shoes that snugly fit your feet.
